HALO Teen Awarded Moroccanoil® Cosmetology Scholarship
Formerly Homeless, Future is Now Bright for Kansas City Teen
KANSAS CITY, MO. – It feels like the holiday season at The HALO Foundation, a Kansas City non-profit committed to empowering youth in the greatest need. Local HALO youth Jasmine received a full-ride scholarship of up to $20,000 to the cosmetology school of her choice, provided by luxury oil-infused hair and body care brand Moroccanoil®. Watch Jasmine learn the exciting news here!
“At Moroccanoil, we have always aimed to empower and give back. Being a part of the salon community has allowed us to become more active in creating a unique scholarship program for aspiring stylists,” says Moroccanoil Co-founder Carmen Tal. “We are thrilled to help make Jasmine’s dreams come true and look forward to seeing her journey to success.”
Jasmine was also recently featured in the Moroccanoil ‘INSPIRED’ short-film series that celebrates the lives and work of inspiring women, along with HALO Founder Rebecca Welsh. This film is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Bryce Dallas Howard and Academy Award® and Emmy®-winning producers RadicalMedia. Watch here.
Jasmine is 18 years old and has lived in a transitional living facility for six months that specializes in helping homeless teens become self-sufficient. She has now met all requirements, including learning to financially budget, adopting key life skills and maintaining a job. Jasmine graduates at the end of December from the homeless program and recently received her high school diploma by completing online classes. She is moving into her first apartment in January 2015.
“We are so excited for Jasmine and her bright future ahead,” said HALO Learning Center Director Carly Manijak. “Through her participation in the Center’s cosmetology program the past six months, we have seen her passion and drive to succeed in the cosmetology industry blossom into a reality for her. Jasmine’s dedication to leading a successful life has shown through her consistent attendance to HALO programming and events, meetings with HALO Center staff, and the strong connections she has made with HALO volunteers, staff, and youth alike.”
Jasmine has chosen to attend Mitsu Sato Hair Academy in Overland Park, Kansas, and will begin January 2015. In response to receiving this wonderful opportunity, Jasmine shared, “The opportunities and exposure HALO has presented me with is one of my biggest blessings. I cannot count how many positive ways the Moroccanoil scholarship has changed my future. I’ve had a passion for doing hair, makeup and nails since I was eight years old, and always hoped to make a career out of it. I know with all my heart and soul that HALO and Moroccanoil are responsible for my biggest dream coming true and changing my life course. HALO has instilled confidence in me that I can accomplish my dreams and be everything I hoped to be—regardless of statistics, social status, or what I’ve come out of.”
“HALO staff serve as parents for our HALO youth; we are their family,” said HALO Center Facilitator Aubony Chalfant. “For example, HALO has continued to assist and guide Jasmine through her transition into “the real world”—from scheduling and taking her on tours to different Cosmetology schools to driving her around on Saturdays to look at apartments to helping her fill out financial aid forms. This is what we do here at HALO, we invest our time and energy into these kids’ lives the same way a family should. And Jasmine’s gratitude and excitement makes our job easy.”
