2014 Independent Swag Fashion Show

2014 Fashion Show“The Fashion Show really is such a magical night for our youth and guests,” said HALO Learning Center Director Carly Manijak. “Throughout the summer, youth explore their creativity, take part in educational workshops, and work with design professionals to create their runway outfits. They experience what it is like to work hard on something and show off their work. You see their self-confidence grow and the youth begin to realize their hopes and dreams can become a reality.”

The HALO Foundation’s 4th annual Fashion Show, “Independent Swag,” will be held on Friday, August 8, 2014 from 6:00- 8:30 p.m. at The Terrace on Grand. The evening will start with a cocktail hour at 6:00 p.m. with the show starting at 7:30 p.m.

The Fashion Show isn’t just a fundraiser for The HALO Foundation, but a learning experience for Kansas City youth in which they are center stage. Throughout the next couple months, HALO youth will participate in workshops preparing for the Fashion Show. Students from Paul Mitchell the School of Overland Park will teach a Cosmetology workshop, teaching youth everything from updos to nail art. However, the main focus is on inner beauty and building confidence. HALO youth that attend this workshop will help the PMTS students on the night of the Fashion Show do the make-up and hair of all of the HALO youth walking the runway. Working with the cosmetology students and even two celebrities are highlights for the youth. The Fashion Design workshop held by local designer, Whitney Manney, teaches youth the basics on sewing and the creative process of fashion design. During the last week before the Fashion Show, “go-time,” Valerie Mayen of “Project Runway” supports and assists the youth in creating and up-cycling their runway outfits for the Show. Working with someone who has been on TV for Project Runway is thrilling for the youth and makes them feel special to receive her personal help. The night of the Fashion Show, the event’s MC, Katie Van Luchene, of KC Magazine will introduce youth and their designs as they walk down the runway.

New this year, the youth participating in the Fashion Show will receive a back-to-school pack at the event. HALO is doing this to help our youth start the new school year with the best foot forward. Donations for this project are greatly appreciated. Donations include school supplies, shoes, jeans, backpacks, restaurant gift cards, etc. If you or someone you know wants to learn more or make a donation, contact the Learning Center Director Carly Manijak at [email protected].

Ticket prices range from $30-$100 based on seat location and an extended cocktail party.
