5th Annual Art of Love Event Recap

Art of Love 2015

The HALO Portland branch just wrapped up its 5th Annual Art of Love Event! It was a beautiful evening, full of noteworthy stories. This year’s event was held at the Mercy Corp event center, and the space made a big impact on the magic of the evening. The event coordinating volunteer, Tara, made the space look radiant with hand picked floral arrangements and table decorations. The artwork featured was 20 original pieces by Portland artists based on poetry from a poet named Graham Murtaugh. All the poetry and artwork were put together in a book people could purchase at the event called Ordinary Time. The poems and abstract art of the Bukesa kids were displayed throughout the other artwork and a video was shown that included both the writing and reading of the kid’s poems.

What makes the event even more inspirational was that each guest was asked to write their goals for something they wanted to bring into the world in the coming year on a Courage Card. Then the cards were compared to what the boys had set their hopes on this year (school, vocational trainings, university etc.). There was also a writing station for people to design cards and write to the boys. The two cards were penned by a calligrapher named Rachel Jacobson, and we can’t wait to send them off to the boys at Bukesa!
