The Kansas City Learning Center came full circle this week when long-time HALO youth, Marjai, helped HALO staff lead a workshop on empathy for local youth emergency shelter teens.
Marjai has been a part of HALO since she was 10 years old. Now 17 and a junior in high school, she continues to foster her childhood passion of writing novels and poetry and was the first freshman at her high school to be asked to join the Poetry Team. She has since competed and won several local and national competitions, traveling as far as California to compete. This past summer, Marjai traveled with a few of her fellow classmates to Mexico to help teach English to middle and high school students in Tijuana.
This past week, Marjai helped teach classes on healthy expression, positive and negative relationships and empathy. By leading a writing exercise, Marjai was able to connect with the youth over their personal stories of hardship and perseverance. Marjai shared with the youth that she had also been in that same shelter at one time, inspiring hope and empathy in the kids at the workshop.
At HALO, we love when our kids support each other and give back to their community in whatever way they can. Marjai loved teaching at HALO, and we plan to have her back soon.
