According to an Episcopal Café study, LGBTQ youth are a high risk population for homelessness. In fact, 20% of homeless youth identify as belonging to the LGBTQ community. Most homeless LGBTQ youth leave home due to family rejection. Other reasons include physical and emotional abuse, neglect, and being kicked out. Rates of homelessness among the rest of the young population is astonishing as well. 58.7% of homeless LGBTQ youth, and 33.4% of heterosexual homeless youth, report having experienced sexual abuse. There is a very high suicide rate among homeless LGBTQ youth. This percentage is not as high among other youth, but it is still an astounding 29%.
