HALO Founder Rebecca Welsh writes:
“A few years ago, I was walking down the hall at one of our local schools when a girl named Kate headed toward me. She was part of HALO, but I hardly recognized her. Her face was pale and sweaty, and she sounded terrible. She had been sick for weeks and couldn’t get in to see the doctor because her mother had been missing for months, and she didn’t have an adult family member to take her. I had never thought of such a thing.
Eventually, we were able to help her get care, but I felt so sad for her. I tried to imagine what it must be like to have no access to medicine. It’s bad enough to deal with your mother being gone but to also have to suffer from something like strep throat because you have no adult to take you, or to watch an infection get worse and worse because you can’t afford care, that is just unfair.
It is because of stories like this that we continue to fight. With the help of our HALO community, we will help children get access to the healthcare they need. Our staff and family will take temperatures, go to doctor appointments, and listen. Most importantly, they will be there in the middle of the night, during the toughest moments, to help ease the pain. And we need your help and support to do this.
We are reminded every single day of how fortunate we are. Healthcare is worth a lot. The foundation of a family is worth a fortune.”
Healthcare is such an important thing for all of us. If you want to give the gift of health this holiday season, please donate here.
